| Amlwch is a small market town and sea port or creek, in the parish of it's name, which is rather extensive,in the hundred of twrcelyn, and the isle of Anglesey. 262 miles NW from London, 20 Nby W from bangor, the like distnace from Holyhead and 18 NE from Beumaris. Situated near the north point of the island. previously to the mining operartions which commenced on the parys mountain about the year 1768, this place was nothing but a small fishing village, but since that period it has continued to increases in population and buildings, until it arrived at the rank of a market town. having many good dwellings and shops with a respectable inn, the latter called "Ty mawr" situated in the market place. | The mines here are suppose to contain the largest bed of copper ore in the world; and the chief peculiarity attached to them, beside the abundnace of ore, consissts in them not being subterranian, but wrought like quarries, the quantity of sulphur obtained in purifying the metal is immense, sufficient, it has been asserted, for the consuption of the whole kingdom. For the accomodation of shipping, the Anglesey Copper Company dug a basin or dock out of solid rock, which though dry at low water, can receive vessels of about 200 tons burden with the flood. it is however greatly exposed and dangerous of access during high northerly winds which drive a heavy sea up the creek of the harbour. | The places of worship are the parish Church of St Eleth (the mother church of Llanwenllwyfo) and three dissenting chapels. The living is a rectory in the patronage of the Bishop of bangor and incumbancy of the rev williams Johnson. A bank for savings and a public school, conducted on the national plan are well suppoorted. the market is held on a saturday and an annual fiar on the 12th of november for cattle. the parish contained , in 1821,5295 inhabitants and in 1831, 6285 |
