| Amlwch is a parish in the hundred of Twrcelyn,Isle of Anglesey, The market town and port is 262 miles NW from London. 20 NW from Bangor and 20 NE from from Holyhead ;situated near the northern extremiity of the island and commanding , on a clear day,a view of the Isle of Man,with the naked eye and part of Cumberland. Previously to the mining operations , which commenced on the Parys mountains, about the year 1768, this place was only a small fishing village, but since the period referred to, has continued to increase in population and buildings, until it has arrived at the rank of a market town: having many good dwellings, shops and inns - off the latter, the "Dinorben Hotel" in the market place, and the "Castle Hotel" Petter Street, may be mentioned as excellantly conducted establisments. During the most flourising state of the mines, it has been ascertained, that from sixty thousand to eighty thousand tons of copper ore were annually extraced from the Parys and Mona workings; but for the last few years not more than ten thousand tons have been obtained annually. | Formally the mines were wrought like quarries, but are now subternneous. The quantity of sulphur obtained in purifying the metal is prodigious, and the alkali works are carried on near the port. For the accomodation of the shipping, the Anglesey Copper Companies excavated a basin or dry dock in the solid rock, which, though dry at low water, can receive vessels of six hundred tons burden with the flood: it is,however, greatly exposed and dangerous of access during high Northerly winds, whoch drive a heavy sea up the creek of the harbour ;a breakwater, however contributes greatly to the safety of the shipping. About the year 1798, an Act of parliment was obtained to enable the Trustees to enlarge the port and levy harbours dues. The most prominent brances beside the mining is the manufacture of colours and paint, and brewing and malting. Amlwch shares with Beumaris and other places, names under that town, in sending a member to Parliament. | The places of worship are the parish Church of St Eleth and various chapels. The living for Amlwch is a rectory, in the presentation of the Bishop of Bangor. The Rev William Morris is the incumbant.National and British Schools,a saving bank, and a literary and Scientific Institute are establised here. The market is held on a Saturday. and the fairs,March 8th,May 8th,August 12th and october21st. The parish contained in 1831 6285 inhabitants and in 1841, 6217. Rhosybol is a small village 3 miles S of Amlwch situated on the raod to llanerchymedd. A good school, conducted on the British plan is well attended by both sexs. in the school room the church service is held every Friday evening. The other places of worship are a chapel each for Baptist,Calvinists and methodists. The population is returned with the parish of Amlwch |
