Notes for Underground visitors

An approved member of Parys Underground Group will lead all underground tours. Visitors must follows the leader’s guidance while underground.

Only visitors with valid public indemnity insurance may enter the mine. Those without insurance may gain it thought temporary membership of PUG for £10 per person. (£5 for unwaged) The Temporary membership can be converted to Full membership at no further cost using the attached form. Full membership lasts one year and allows you to visit the mines again. A member’s newsletter is also produced.

Personal insurance is not covered by the group and is a matter for individuals to arrange.

The underground mine has areas of obvious hazard, steep drops, deep and acidic pools but with due care the usual visitor route is safe. The underground trip involves some ladder work, short crawls ,areas of restricted height and some steep areas. Most of the mine is as it was left 100 years ago. It is not a sanitised show cave. Visitors must be physically fit and at least 17 years of age.

Due to the acidity and secondary deposits Wellingtons, gloves and a boiler suit should be worn. Wellingtons rather than boots are recommended as some areas are above ankle deep in water. Protective head gear, belts and lamps can be provided by PUG.

Photographic, but not video equipment may be taken underground but precautions must be taken against the ingress of dirt and acidic moisture.

The mine is an area of active scientific archaeological and historical research, please do not damage or collect specimens. Many of the formations are particularly delicate.

You should inform your group leader of any special medical conditions that apply to any in your group. It is advisable to carry relevant medication with you if required.

It is essential to book visits in advance by contacting the Access officer.

Visits are arranged most Wednesday evenings at 18:30. However for larger groups (up to 12 people) other times can be arranged if PUG guides are available.
You should allow around 3 hours to complete the tour and return to the car park.

Driving directions to Parys Mountain. From Chester take the A55 Expressway along the North Wales Coast road. After passing Bangor, with the magnificent views of the Snowdonia Mountains on your left, take the A5 road bridge over the Menai Straits. Just over the bridge take the second exit road and turn right onto the A2025. Follow this road first in the direction of Benllech and then Amlwch which is about 25 miles from the road bridge. At the mini roundabout on the approach to Amlwch follow the Brown Tourist Signs left up the road leading to the top of the mountain.
