Wages and costs

In common with most mines in the 19th century a miner arriving at Amlwch did not get paid during the first month of work. During this time he had a great number of tools and equipment to buy. Candles, powder, fuses, hammers, chisels and spades were all purchased  in the company store from the agents who made a profit on their sale.

Between May 1775 and February 1778 William Elliot the Roe and Co Agent at Mona mine stopped a total of £230 from miners wages for equipment.

The price of equipment in 1860 is shown below:-

The wages of different groups have been quoted at various times:-

Year Worker and payments
1768-1798 Miners earned 5/- to 15/- per day.(Walter Davies)
1772 Carters taking ore from the mines to the port. 2/6d per ton.
1796 Tut workers earned 1/- to 1/8d per day. ( Farm workers got 1/2d to 1/4d while Cornish miners earned 7/6d)
1799 Miners earned 8/- per week. Ore weigher at AP received 14d /day
1800 Each miner received 8/- per week certain wages.(Walter Davies)
1801 Bingley quoted workers as earning 1/6d per day. 
While a good course of ore could earn 4/- per day.
1800 Each miner received 8/- per week certain wages.(Walter Davies)
1819 Precipitation worker 14d per day.
1823 Precipitate furnace or roasting ores1/6 per day. Stewards shift allowance 1/6 
1824 Mine agents £9/3/- per week.
1828 Smelter workers better paid than miners. Bricklayers 30/- ,smiths 13/- and carpenters 12/- per week. Mona mine clerks £60 pa.
1831 Tributers paid on so many shillings per pennyweight assay per ton of dressed ore. Poor bargains 32/1d down to 16/-d for good ore. Tutwork between £4 and £8/10d per fathom. Bargains on waste heaps were 31/-
1853 Precipitation worker 7/- per week. Boys 7d per day. 
Young children washing ore 4d per day.
Carter working for William Hughes 12/- per week.
1857 Mona mine assay agent £108 PA.
1860 Mine agent Tiddy earned £175 pa.
