Wages and costsIn common with most mines in the 19th century a miner arriving at Amlwch did not get paid during the first month of work. During this time he had a great number of tools and equipment to buy. Candles, powder, fuses, hammers, chisels and spades were all purchased in the company store from the agents who made a profit on their sale. Between May 1775 and February 1778 William Elliot the Roe and Co Agent at Mona mine stopped a total of £230 from miners wages for equipment. The price of equipment in 1860 is shown below:-
